When God isn't enough, or rather, when isn't God enough?
I have a problem.
I have a job that gives me incredibly great discounts at potentially one of my favorite retail stores. Somehow, I get sucked into buying something (because of the incredible deal, of course) most times I work there, which fortunately isn’t much at all. Just this weekend, I bought a sweater that I probably don’t need, but decided I wanted it, nonetheless. I can’t think of how many times I see some cute outfit on a model on one of our posters and think “wow, I wish I could pull that off.”
“All of You is more than enough for all of me, for every thirst and every need. You satisfy me with your love, and all I have in You is more than enough.”
I can’t think of the number of times I have sung that song and not even realized the weight of the lie I was raising up to God. Sure, with my mouth I can speak of my Heavenly Father being more than enough to get me through this life on earth, but when was the last time I lived it. I find myself desiring useless things everyday. For instance, I can’t wait to get my own place so that I can decorate it to look like my own little nook…and I really want my own camera so I can start freelancing; but then again, once I get that, I should really get a new laptop to edit on… I wish that I could open up scriptures and point out the verses stating that “thou shalt inherit nice living rooms and cool technological equipment.” Ha.
Its best realized in the form of a question. So when do my earthly desires matter more than my relationship with Christ? James McDonald summarizes it best when he says that “the root of covetousness is a rejection of God’s sufficiency.” When we are fixated on things of this earth, that is when we are coveting, and putting those desires above God. We don’t need the nonessentials…exactly why they are called “NON-ESSENTIAL.” Paul was wise when he told the church at Colossae to “Set your affection on things above, not on things of the earth.” (v. 3:2)
So, what now? Its not going to be the easiest transition there is, but its sure something to work on. After all, my relationship is about working to change everyday, constantly seeking out a stronger relationship with my Creator. I encourage you to seek out ways to make sure God is more than enough for you in your daily walk. Seek His blessings, and find Him to be the One thing that will keep you going day after day.
